Unusual Confederate soldier’s letter written by “John L. Kunzie, Lt. Co. B 4th Ala. Regt.” 2pp., on May 1st, 1864. The letter is written on the back of a Confederate payroll form, in the typical “brown bag” Confederate paper. In part, “On last Friday General Longstreet’s Corps was reviewed by Uncle Bob Lee near Gordonsville. Its troops was proud to see him & they cheered him loud & long. Great many ladies present. There is a great many rumors afloat as to what our corps will do. It is said that Longstreet is here to march Generals Burnsides & Butler in the peninsular soon. I saw that we will go to N.C. The whole command is in fine health & excellent spirits & ready for the coming struggle perfectly confident of whipping Grant & that badly. We all believe that this is the last year of the war. I have received some letters lately from Georgia & Ala. stating that the people was scared nearly to death & they think that the demonstrations that Grant is making in front of Lee’s army is only a blind, that he (Grant) intends to attract Johnston, get Atlanta & overrun that part of the country. They say that he has no idea of fighting Lee. Such is not my belief. I am sorry to learn that Johnston has been dissatisfied. But it is nothing more than I expected....” VG
