A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., "Head Quarters 1st Army Corps near White Oak Church, Va., Mar. 10, 1863", in part: "…Lewis has got high enough to wear 3 stripes on his arm…Lewis is a good fateful boy and he has earned his promotion…there seems to be the same excitement in your vicinity that there is here. That is the raising of Nigger Regiments. Only last week there was a detail of about 30 from our Regt went to New York to take commissions in Nigger Reg's. A good many do not think so much about the commission as they do a chance to get out of the service altogether…one of my messmates told me that he was going to have a captain's commission in a few days. Capt. Cary has got his discharge from the army and I for one am mighty glad…I hope that he will not try to make folks think at home that he was over and above brave in battle for some one might happen round that knows all about the steel vest & his liking to hug a good sized tree as long as there was a "zip" of a bullet…C. W. Manning…". Light toning, else VG
