Union volunteer's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., Grafton, [West] Virginia, July 2, 1861, to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "Last Sunday, our regiment left Camp Dennison for Virginia. We crossed over the Ohio on the 1st of July and arrived here this afternoon. We have orders to be ready to march at 12 to cut off the retreat of a party [of] the enemy…leaving Camp Dennison at 12 on Sunday morn we went to Columbus and then to Belair a point on the Ohio side of the river about 4 miles below Wheeling crossing the Ohio …then rode on the cars. The road is the Baltimore & Ohio…the scenery is good. I had no idea Virginia was so hilly. The road lead through a good many tunnels vary[ing] from 1/8 to a mile in length and then cutting right hills and over small streams…direct to Grafton, Sixth Regiment Co. A K. N. Cowing." Light toning at folds, else near fine.
