Union volunteer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., Elk Fork, [West Virginia], Sept. 23, 1861, to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing and mother, in part: "…I say good for the naval expedition. Gen. [R. E.] Lee has retreated and prisoners say he has packed up and is off for Staunton. We have been reinforced with a battery of artillery & several…the indications are that we will make an advance soon. The action between Lee & our force was not general. They did not advance to our main fortifications…if they had they would not have escaped so easily. We lost not a man. The rumors here is that before the action [occurred] a difficulty occurred between the Tenn. & Louisiana troops and a large number were killed…our camp is situated in a sugar grove on the banks of the Elk Fork…direct letters Western Virginia via Beverly. I have strong hopes that this winter will decide the contest…your affect. Bro., K. N. Cowing…". Light toning, else VG
