War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Green Pond, [S. C.], Oct. 23, 1862, to his mother, in part: "I write least you you after hearing of the battle near Pocotaligo …be uneasy. Our battalion was not in the fight…the enemy…have all returned to their gun boats & will not molest us again…we lost, least, several good men. The enemy is reported to have lost about 300 killed. They landed about 8,000 strong at McKay's Pondearly yesterday morning & advanced on the rail road toward Pocotaligo & Coosawhatchie. McKay's Pondis between the Pocotaligo & Coosawhatchie Rivers & the nearest Pondof access in Gun Boats to our rail road…in case of future battles or engagements occurring in this section you must not be uneasy about us for the mail always stops as a natural consequence as all the trains are used to bring soldiers etc. I will always write when there is any danger or accident. If I am wounded or killed I should want you to know it immediately…we whipped the Yankees very handsomely yesterday…A. B. Mulligan." Minor soiling, else VG.
