War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "In camp on Cheehan's Road, April 12-13, 1863," to his mother, in part: "…the excitement attending the battle in Charleston harbor on last Tuesday has…pretty well subsided. Reports reached us here of skirmishing along the coast between this and Savannah…the inactivity of the enemy is remarkable. The season has passed for them to make a land attack in this section…I went to Augusta, Ga…I saw Ellen that used to belong to Cousin Caroline. She looks very well. She said her children were well. Said her brother John died last summer…Charleston…is too strongly fortified for them to take it…now about Simon. I need him as soon as he can be spared but what will Eliza do without him. If she can spare him. He can come down by himself and must start at once. Give him $15 & let him come through Green Pond. I want him to bring my summer clothing…I must have my white pant, white & buff vest…more good news from Charleston. The Iron Sides, the strongest & greatest of the Yankee gun boats is said to be so badly damaged that she will have to be abandoned by them. They are…stripping her of her guns. So perishes the greatest iron clads ever built…it is only to be regretted…that the great Yankee fleet did not come near to our forts…we would have sunk or captured every "Devil's son of them."…their Devil catcher was captured by us. The ladies of Charleston regret that the arch fiend did not stick to the fleet until he got ready to convey them all to a warmer port than ours…ships run the blockade…where the enemy are as thick as hopes off our city…Alfred…[April 13th]…I want Simon to purchase for me a small supply of fish hooks, lines etc…the price of everything is getting so very high that I don't know what we are to do about buying anything…if matters get to looking more favorable for peace this summer. I shall probably quit the service…tell Simon that he must keep his [?] in his possession…for if he puts them in Express Co. He must have to pay for them…let him bring a common trunk to put the things in for me…A. B. Mulligan." VG.
