War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. oblong 12mo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Camp of 5th So. Ca. Cav.", Oct. 3, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…today being my birthday…I drop you a line to let you know that i am up & doing pretty well. There was severe fighting along our lines yesterday, but our Brig. was not engaged. I am in command of about 300 dismounted men & placed at a bridge within half mile of my camp to act as a reserve guard should the enemy advance…our cause is not losing anything, so far here. We have captured thousands of prisoners…a majority of the prisoners are foreign who cant speak a word of our language. Often one of our men capture a dozen of them. In a month or two Genl. Grant's whole army…will be composed of such men. His old veterans are going off service & he is now exerting himself to do what he can at once…Alfred B. Mulligan". Light toning, else VG.
