War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain "Charlie", Signal Hill, [near New Market Heights, Petersburg, Va.], Feb. 5, 1865, reading, in part: "…we (the battery) are still on at the Signal Hill and do intend to hold it at all hazards that bis as long as we remain here. We have on hand in our haversacks three days rations to be in readiness in case there should be a sudden move of any kind take place…from the papers brought in camp…I find that four Peace Commissioners from the South have been passed through our lines to Fortress Monroe…they have been met by Seward & A. Lincoln in person. What will come out of it or what will be brought about from the meeting we must wait patiently and hope that there may be something done towards settling this great and murderous rebellion. The South find that they are every month being drawn together and met with the strong outstretched arms and iron grasp of U. S. which will in a few months more be [?] upon them unless they do something…in the way of peace…I do hope that that time will soon come and the forlorn, care worn soldier sent home to enjoy the comforts of life…Charlie".
