STEIGHT, Abel D. (1828-1892) Colonel of the 51st Indiana. On May 3, 1863, he surrendered his command of 1,700 men to Nathan Bedford Forrest and 400 men, when Forrest bluffed him into believing that there were more Confederates by marching them in circles. Confined in Libby Prison in Richmond, he made his escape on February 9, 1864, in the tunnel engineered by Colonel Thomas E. Rose. Autograph Note Signed, "A.D. Streight Col. 51st Ind. Vol." sending his autograph upon request and also attaching a small 3/8"x5/8" albumen photo of himself in uniform. VG.
