War-date Union cavalryman's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written on "No North, no South…but Equal and Exact Justice to all" patriotic stationery, by new-recruit, Joseph C. Sperry, Co. I., 10th Illinois Cavalry, "Camp Benton, 10th Cavalry Regiment, Ill., Volunteers, Company I, March 19, 1862, reading, in part: "…when I was at Springfield I saw the U. S. officer that mustered us in & he said that we would [not] have drawn our pay in the company. I intend to follow the regiment to Hell or have it. I would rather be at home…it wont be long before we are all at home…we will go back to Camp Butler to guard them prisoners. It [is] uncertain what they will do with us. We got our sabers this evening. It is the talk all over the camp that we must leave here before we are discharged. Colonel Barrett got a dispatch from the president that he didn't want us [discharged]…you said that you wanted some money. You shall have some as soon as I can get it. I cant borrow any from the boys…I have no money to buy postage stamps…I am cook this week…it keeps me very busy to cook for the company. I wish I had you to help me…J. C. Sperry…". Negligible loss to burn mark, minor soiling, else VG.
