Autograph Letter Signed, “”C.I. Clark”, 2p. quarto, January 1, 1861, Charleston, and reads in most part: “...I appreciate very highly your kind feeling & advice to South Carolina. We are in a position which requires the exercise of great providence...The movement of Anderson in occupying Fort Sumter has has greatly complicated perplexed our officers & I fear will result in waht we most earnestly desire to avoid - an issue of blood. We cannot permit Fort Sumter to be conferred if we can possibly avoid it...If blood flows as heavy responsibility will rest on Andersons head for he & his garrison were in no more danger than you are now....I have never seen anything to equal the calm determination of our people to meet the issue be it what it may...” Near Fine.
