Autograph Letter Signed by the Adjutant General of the State of Maine, 4p. folio, May 26, 1861, Augusta, Maine, on Adjutant General’s Office illustrated letterhead, with cover addressed to General Davis Tillson (1830-1895) the letter reads in part: “...I am satisfied of the very great advantage to the state...in the present unparalleled emergency in availing ourselves of your Superior practical knowledge of the legitimeate duties in detail of each & all of us...The Gov has recd a letter from Cameron Secy of War in pressing upon you (him) in advance, the necessity of an absolute adherence in your (his) appointments [then lists suggestions]...it is not by any means a finality......If we can secure the cooperation of Massts. & some other states, in attepmting to have this rescinded we shall try it measureably...It would be difficult to find men qualified for Capts. under 30 & Lieuts. under 22 with whom parents would be willing to trust their sons...” Much more on raising troops and officers.
