Autograph Letter Signed, 6p. octavo, May 10, 1864, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and reads in part: “...Steele has retreated to the Rock. The rebs attack him at the Selene 30 miles from here and our brigade fought the whole of Fagan’s Army for 4 hours whipped then killed and wounded 3000 of the rebs. Did not take any prisoners. There was a negro reg in our brigade and as soon as the rebs saw them they cried no quarter. The blacks echoed it back and did not take a prisoner but took 6 pieces of their artillery away from them. They took 3 stands of colors from the rebs in the fight and Steele burnt all his train 300 wagons and put for the Rock. He sent 100 ambulances to this place loaded with wounded. Our brigade since it left the Rock has lost over 600 men. Henry West is among the wounded and is not expected to live; part of our brigade has come here since and Price is laying in our front with 30,000 men and are at work night and day building earth works and a flag of truce came in today to have all the women and children removed...We have about 5 thousand men here now. Gen. Andrew says he can warrant us a fight in 3 days...Price swears he will go to Missouri this is the road he has chosen...Eighty of them tried to capture a picket post they heard them coming and moved the post and fired on them. When they left they took two of the men that head been in here to trade and hung them and then threw them in the river. We took out their bodies Sunday....” VG.
