Typed Letter Signed, “Earle G. Wheeler” as General, United States Army Chief of Staff, 1p. quarto, February 29, 1964, on U.S. Army “The Chief of Staff” lettersheet, titled “MEMORANDUM FOR: CHAIRMAN, JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF/ SUBJECT: Condition of General MacArthur”, it reads in most part: “1. For some time now, we have been concerned with the condition of General MacArthur who is suffering from a pretty severe case of jaundice. On Wednesday, Lieutenant General Heaton visited General MacArthur in New York and convinced him that he should be hospitalized for observation and evaluation. We have persuaded him to come to Washington to be hospitalized at Walter Reed. He weill be accompanied by Mrs. MacArthur and Major General Whitney. 2. The Air Force is providing a SAM aircraft to pick up General MacArthur and party at 1100 hours on Monday, 2 March, and fly them to the Washington National Airport...they will be met by Lieutenant General Heaton...General MacArthur will occupy the Presidential Suite at Walter Reed. The Surgeon General is unable to say how long he will be in the hospital, although we anticipate that it may be for several weeks or even longer...We hope to avoid any publicity...but are prepared to make a routine press announcement in the event that such action becomes necessary...” Bearing “FOR OFFICAL USE ONLY” red stamp, this letter is Fine.MacArthur would died at Walter Reed on April 5, 1964.
