(huge title) at first sounds…and certainly reads, like a virulent anti-semitic diatribe ! In reality it is a grossly and curiously satirical, fictitious account of an imaginary meeting of a nonexistent "Society for the Suppression of the Jews held last evening in the blue parlor of the Grand Union Hotel at Saratoga, N.Y." The bold sub headlines are worded similarly, adding: "…a terrible plot against the chosen people." …Written and published by Harry H. Marks, William Street, New York and printed at "F. Groneberg's Book and Printing Office, William Street, New York." 6½ x 10. In reading it one is at first incensed at the malevolent accusations against every phase of Judaic life and personage of importance in America, until realization registers that the entire four pages are tongue-in-cheek ! The sham becomes more obvious towards the end in the final Resolution: "…We are unalterably opposed to the further emancipation of the Jewish people and we appeal to all Christian peoples to aid us in restoring the Ghetto, the Inquisition and their agencies…" and in the final closing paragraph about the meeting: "after a vote of thanks to the Chair, the meeting adjourned with three cheers for Haman, and Hilton, Torquemada…the Inquisition and the Manhattan Beach Hotel." Aging and paper somewhat fragile with few tears (but not loose) two small pieces on the lower corners of the extremely wide blank margins and repairs to blank margin edges. Some dust marks on the folds of the front page, but all intact. The author Harry H. Marks (1855-1916) was a British journalist and politician and the son of a noted reform rabbi. He took up journalism in the U.S. and worked five years for the N.Y. "World and Daily Morning News." Returning to England 1883 he established and edited the "Financial News" and authored various books; 1889 he was elected to the British Parliament. …And was known as a bitter anti-zionist. Though undated this was obviously written and printed in America during those five years spent there is no later than 1883. Listed in Singerman No. 2867 with only two known copies "circa 1880's." A unique and rather startling imprint.
