VAN CORTLAND, Philip (1749-1831) was an American surveyor, landowner, and politician from Westchester County, New York. Van Cortlandt was the son of Pierre Van Cortlandt and brother of Pierre Van Cortlandt Jr. He was a Continental Army officer during the American Revolution, and later served several terms in the United States House of Representatives. Autograph Letter Signed “Ph. V. Courtland” Croton, March 29, 1797, 1pp., to his father. In part, “Mama hinted to me ... when I was at Peeks Kill that you wished to remove to this place and that you were depriving yourself of that gratification because you had given it out of your hands and consequently could not with propriety reclaim it ... I have always had the inclination to contribute to your and Mamas ease ... therefore, if you like, do not delay but come whenever you think proper and it pleases you. I will be perfectly satisfied ...”
