Booklet, “REPORT of the SECRETARY OF WAR,” 1856, Senate, 28pp, disbound, fine. Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, provides the Senate with details and correspondence regarding the “massacre of Lt. Grattan and his command by the Indians.” The Gratin Massacre otherwise known as the Battle of Fort Laramie took place on August 17, 1854. It occurred east of Fort Laramie, Nebraska Territory, now in present-day Goshen County, Wyoming, when twenty-nine U.S. soldiers were killed by Brulé Lakota (Sioux) after one of the soldiers had shot their Chief Conquering Bear in the back. It was an early and significant event in the plains Indian Wars.
