Harold I. (Tom) Carlisle (1904-1970) cartoonist and understudy of Jay Norwood Darling of The Des Moines Register and trustee of the Des Moines Associated of Fine Arts, Harold Carlisle lived in Des Moines. He was the lead cartoonist at the Des Moines Register from 1949-53. Twice Political Signed Cartoon, "Carlisle" and also inscribed, 14-1/2" x 19" original editorial cartoon on art board related to then-secretary of agriculture Charles Brannan's plan for a farm program in the Truman administration. In 1949, Brannan advocated his plan to guarantee farmers' income, while letting free market forces determine the prices of commodities. This art depicts Brannan as a patent medicine hawking his "Dr. Brannon's Elixir of Farm Price Support" to a farmer as a dancing Indian in the background near the traveling salesman's wagon beats a drum of "Federal Farm Agencies." The elixir is "compounded of magic herbs and other rare and mysterious ingredients." The art is by Tom Carlisle who inscribes this particular piece "To Charley Brannan with non-professional apologies/Tom Carlisle." Carlisle was the lead cartoonist at the Des Moines Register from 1949-53. Art board has minor folds, appearing to have been rolled at some point, o/w very good condition.
