Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of Harper’s Weekly, December 8, 1877, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the front page “Sitting Bull and the United States Commission - From Sketches by Jerome Stillson.” There are four scenes with an inset of Sitting Bull and a second inset, White Eagle. The accompanying story is on an interior page. May 1877 Sitting Bull led his band across the border into Saskatchewan, Canada. He remained in exile for many years near Wood Mountain, refusing a pardon and the chance to return. According to this report, “Sitting Bull’s camp contains nearly 3000 souls, men women and children. His warriors number about 500. ..” Hunger and cold eventually forced Sitting Bull, his family, and nearly 200 other Sioux in his band to return to the United States and surrender on July 19, 1881.
