Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of the Massachusetts Centinel, February 27, 1788, 4pp., VG. From page three, under a column headline “The Glorious Fabrick” is presented a 3" x 2" engraving of the famous Federal Edifice cartoon, one of the earliest political cartoons in American History. The cartoon shows six pillars in the national edifice, joined and upright, signifying that six states have now ratified the new Constitution. Each pillar is labeled by a state in order of its ratification, beginning with Delaware, then Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Above the leaning column at the far right is labeled New Hampshire, are the words “It Will yet rise.” The accompanying report closes “... we may venture to assert that the cause of Federalism in New Hampshire will not suffer a diminution - and that their Pillar of the Federal edifice, THOUGH IT NOW RESTETH, WILL MOST ASSUREDLY RISE.” The Delegates of the people of the State of New Hampshire, approved on June the 21, 1788.
